At the end of 1997 Porsche presents the replacement of the 911 (993), the 996. A revolutionary car for Porsche, prone to air-cooled engines, and the round headlights that made the 911 recognizable at first glance. The designer of the 996 was Pinky Lai, who wanted to overturn the line of the coupe from Stuttgart, leaving the essence of the 911 unchanged: the 4 seats and the boxer engine at the rear. For economies of scale, the 996 shared many components with the coeval Boxster, but despite this it was the best-selling 911 up to then, with more power than the 993, greater comfort and lower weight.
